Drone Seed Sowing | Wetter Farming Typha Trial
We have been sowing typha (bulrush) seeds on an area of re-wetted agricultural peat in Greater Manchester.
The crop of typha will be farmed and the seed heads will be used to create BioPuff, a revolutionary eco textile which can be used as a sustainable filling for puffer jackets.
We will keep you updated as the project progresses!

Making wetter farming a reality
Переглядів 2123 місяці тому
Wetter farming is the process of raising the water table on drained farmland and growing crops which thrive in these conditions. The aim of wetter farming practices is to reduce the carbon emissions from drained land, whilst keeping it financially viable for the farmer or landowner. However there are a number of practical and policy considerations that need to be taken into account when thinkin...

Re-wetting a drained agricultural peat field: a step-by-step guide
Переглядів 3748 місяців тому
Many of our lowland peatlands have been drained and converted to agriculture - but this causes the carbon in the peat to oxidise and be released as greenhouse gases contributing to the climate emergency. But by re-wetting the peat we can reduce these emissions whilst still growing crops which are suited to these wetter conditions. Find out how we are re-wetting a drained agricultural peat field...

In recent visits I have noted so many trees have been destroyed, so much wildlife habitat removed. Each tree is (was) a living organism providing food, shelter & a home for many others. My opinion - I preferred the paths with foliage hanging over. Perhaps a tree-lined theme park is the aim...

I stopped visiting Mere some years ago. Like many of our public spaces the site had become a dog toilet. The proliferation of ignorant dog owners all but remove any opportunity to see Wildlife at Mere Sands. I've suggested for many years a complete ban on dogs entering nature reserves and would fully support any campaign aimed at achieving such an outcome. This development of the Mere Sands site looks interesting but with out conscientious managment ie the banning of dogs the development will be futile

Interesting mesolithic knowledge thank you . Some history i have learnt is there used to be an ancient boat harbour in huyton where boats sailed up the river alt to a big lake that used to exist where the river alt surfaces in the Hag Plantation in huyton . I believe the sea tide used to come inland up to lunt meadows . It was all a tidal marsh that has now been drained . The village of Formby used to be part of the same sea marsh that has also been reclaimed by drainage . In the 1700s all the brooks and ditches across britain were dug out and spread out the water table and made such rivers like the river alt much smaller of a river than it used to be by the ditches spreading out the catchment area .

Hurricane Ian blew down a tree in our backyard. It housed a mama Eastern grey squirrel and her two female babies. We heard the calls coming from the forest floor for about two hours over the din of the wind and rain. We ended up taking the babies after we were unable to reunite Mama and babies. I had them for about 36 hours before I could turn them over to my local rescue society because of the storm. They were certainly labor intensive. I had to hydrate them every 2 hours and make sure they were always warm enough. Not gonna lie. I did get attached. By my calculations they should be ready for soft release in about a week. They will live out their lives on a protected no hunt no trap reserve. I still sometimes see Mama and she always stops to yell at me from the fence 😄 I'm used to destruction and uncertainty when it comes to hurricanes in Florida but we were really glad to be at the right time and place for those little babies. Not today Ian... not today.

I visited a small museum in Knutsford a number of years ago and they had a small piece of 'bog oak' but no information card so I asked the curator how old it was and he told me ten thousand and six years old. I was amazed how accurate the dating was and asked how it was so precise. The curator told me he started work there six years earlier and it was 10,000 years at the time he started there.🙃
